Pennsylvania Family Selected for a Keep Swimming Foundation Grant

Recently, our Board of Directors met to review applicants from our February 2021 grant cycle.

After careful consideration, the Board of Directors selected one family to receive a grant for a total of $500.

The following is their story:

Family #1 – Wapum, PA – Recipients of a $500 Grant:

The son of this Pennsylvania family was born with a rare congenital defect called Malrotation Volvulus, an intestinal issue that causes the gut to turn during development. Given the life threatening nature of his circumstance, he had 93% of his intestinal tract removed as an infant. Six months later, he received a liver and intestine transplant.

The transplant was mildly successful. He underwent several rejection episodes until finally receiving a new transplant procedure for a small bowel, liver, stomach and pancreas at age three.

He experienced chronic rejection for fourteen years until finally reaching a point where he needed to be re-listed for a third round of similar transplants. In July 2020, after waiting a month in the hospital, he received the gift of life for a third time in the form of the same transplants that he underwent fourteen years prior.

We recently spoke with the mother. Fortunately, the family of three returned home in March and their son is thriving.

This grant is to help cover all transportation costs (particularly gasoline and parking at a hospital in downtown Pittsburgh), as well as bedside meals. This grant covers the full amount of receipts submitted to Keep Swimming Foundation by the family.
